Because the same small team handles most phases, the work moves in a coordinated sequence rather than waiting on separate contractors. Small-scale plumbing and electrical work is performed where building code allows. When licensed or highly specialized work is required, we help the homeowner coordinate the appropriate outside professional as part of the overall project plan. Tile and stone are a large part of most of these rooms; that work is described in the next section.

Tile and stone run through most of the projects we take on — bathroom floors and walls, showers and tub surrounds, kitchen floors and backsplashes, entryways, and balconies that sit over living space. Whether tile lasts is decided underneath it, in the flatness of the substrate, the movement the assembly is allowed and the waterproofing behind it, so that is where most of the work goes.

Tile is installed following Tile Council of North America recommendations and industry standards. We have been trained in Schluter products and use both their uncoupling membranes and profiles, and we install Ditra heating systems under tile. Wet areas are waterproofed as a bonded assembly rather than left to the tile to keep water out, large-format tile is set with leveling clips so each piece sits flush with the next, and thinset is combed to the notch the tile calls for — the difference between tile that lasts and tile that sounds hollow underfoot.

Slate, porcelain, ceramic and natural stone each behave differently, and the layout is set out on site so that cuts fall where they are least conspicuous. Where a floor is heated, or a shower has to be built to a particular slope, the detail is worked out before the first tile is set rather than adjusted around afterwards.

Interior remodeling covers the spaces between the kitchen and the bath — living areas, bedrooms, entryways, stairs, closets, laundry rooms and finished basements. Walls move, openings change, floors and ceilings are rebuilt, and the finished rooms need to feel as though they were always meant to be that way.

We take particular pride in high-quality drywall installation and finishing. Where others are happy with close enough we are happy to make the finish that much closer to perfect. Framing, insulation, drywall, trim, doors and paint are sequenced together by one team, so the finished result reads as a single cohesive space rather than a collection of disconnected trades.

Finish carpentry is where a project stops looking new and starts looking finished. Trim and moulding, built-ins, shelving, stair parts, mantels and cabinetry details are fitted to the house as it actually is rather than as a plan assumed it would be. Small- or large-scale carpentry, we enjoy constructing new projects or reviving the older ones that need a little love.

We can also provide custom fabricated building materials to suit your needs. We have built custom pocket door rollers and tracks, welded custom butcher block mounting brackets, and built custom doors. We follow all applicable building codes and when required retrieve a permit for the work needed.

We order and install doors and windows for both new construction and existing structures. We also repair traditional sash-cord and weight systems. Many times old windows would work if their sash weights were functional, unfortunately the cords become old and brittle, eventually breaking. Once they are repaired, the windows move up and down seamlessly.

Gutters are a very important part of your roofing system that can affect your foundation and most things between. We use a roof to gutter sizing calculation to ensure that you have properly sized gutters for your roof area. We also address exterior building-envelope conditions involving doors, windows, trim, siding, gutters, balconies, and localized water intrusion, with an emphasis on identifying and correcting the underlying cause of failure.

Where a balcony is located over occupied space, the assembly requires carefully planned waterproofing, drainage and finish materials. We can evaluate these projects and coordinate an appropriate system based on the conditions involved. These floors are typically finished with tile, however other exterior grade flooring materials can be used.

Some of the most valuable work we do is determining why something is failing before repairing it. Water staining a ceiling, a door that will not stay latched, a floor that flexes, a room that never feels right — these have causes, and we would rather find the cause than cover it.

Where building code allows we are happy to handle small-scale plumbing and electrical projects. We follow all applicable building codes and when required retrieve a permit for the work needed. Where a building problem involves water intrusion, condensation or ventilation, we repair the underlying building condition.

We are glad to consider projects that other contractors decline as too small, too unusual or too particular. A single well built built-in, an awkward repair, a detail that has to match something built a century ago, or one room done properly rather than a whole house done quickly.
